About Us
E&H Building Contractors Ltd are based in Tingwall, seven miles from Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. Our company was established in 1988, the founding partners – Elphinstone and Howarth – then having 35 years experience of house building in Shetland.
Continuous Improvement
As a company we have a policy of commitment to continuous improvement and are therefore constantly on the lookout for the latest developments in products and services. This research into best practice enables us to provide the homebuyer or homebuilder with the most up to date specifications available.
Building Regulations - 2010 Changes
Significant changes to UK building regulations due to environmental concerns have altered the standards to which houses must now be built.
The Building (Scotland) Act states a need to further the:
- conservation of fuel and power
- achievement of sustainable development.
Pioneers of Energy Efficient Construction
We are well placed to meet and surpass these building regulations standards, having been pioneers of energy efficient construction methods and designs not just in Shetland but the UK since the mid 1990s.
Our company were the first house-builders in:
- the UK to build a Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) home - a system that brought a new standard in strength and energy efficiency to timber house construction
- Shetland to install warm water under-floor heating and whole house heat recovery and ventilation systems.
Scandinavian Style Housing for Shetland
Over the years our company has also improved and developed building systems for more traditional timber frame housing in Shetland.
In the 1980s Scandinavian homes, with their brightly painted or natural timber cladding and attractive design, were hugely popular.
Using this model, together with high thermal insulation, we produce our own homes in the Scandinavian style but better suited to the unique Shetland climate.
